“When you sit to Meditate, you are inviting an intimate encounter with your own mind and heart” ~ unknown

There are many ways to practice Meditation. Just as with Yoga, there is not “one” way things can be practiced.   We must find that way which works for us.

Example of Simple Breathing Practice that can be very Meditative:

Start by finding a comfortable seated position either on the floor or on a chair.   Close your eyes and let your spine lift and lengthen without becoming rigid or stiff in your body.   Check in with yourself to feel your body relax.  Let your shoulders draw back and down from the ears.  Feel that you are grounding through the areas in your body that connect to the floor or chair.  As soon as we start focusing on what is happening with ourselves, we create a connection to the ”present moment”.   Once your body is comfortable, the “mind chatter” will quiet somewhat.   As you start to slow down your thoughts, begin to focus on your breathing.   Allow deep long breaths to flow in and out through the nose.   Try not to force your breathing. Instead, see if you can breathe in for 4-6 seconds and out for same amount of time.  When you notice thoughts coming into the mind (which they will!) recognize that you are starting to think, and gently bring your awareness back to your breathing.  Sit and watch your breath flowing in and out  for 5 minutes.   After you have sat for a bit, it is always good to move slowly back into the action or what it is that you need to do.  It might be best for you to rest in Savasana for a few minutes before going back into the “World”.     You will notice a calmer, more relaxed self.  This simple practice is a great way to connect to yourself.   Practice in the morning, afternoon or even before bedtime.   You can increase practice time to 10 or 20 minutes as desired.
